Entertaiment efficiency and the Internet

Entertainment

Entertainment on the internet has been its number one trend ever since its inception. It has been the reason why it has evolved so much and has caused controversial and cynical issues. Although the internet has created a lot of opportunities for what wouldn’t have been there it sure is a believing and trustful island.

The different readings I did for this session “Computation Nations and Swarm Supercomputers”, “Digital Technology and Cultural Goods”, “Technological and Social Drivers of Change in the Online Music Industry”, “The People Own Ideas”, “Mixing it up on the Web: Legal Issues Arising from Internet “Mashups””, “Snack Attack!” all focused on the different aspect of entertainment use and misuse on the internet.

The music industry is growing in ways that have included the internet has its number source of dispersion, with the emergence of MP3 players especially the Ipodtm. This has created more sites that are willing to freely distribute both movies and music at expense of introducing new forms of sale. Limewiretm for instance would willing let you download music with a basic package but are also offering a premium package for a fee. The former even though violates the copyright has a backup in the later in a different form of attraction to people. The has made the law of piracy and copyrighting more stringent on the internet and has lead controversial, why arrest peole who sell pirated movies and not music and not site that openly distribute them. Laws and regulation governing the internet clearly monitors its use and eventhough there are different questions arising from its use everyday there are still profits made in spite of the different legal issue and its potential damaging effects in the future.

Social Relationships and Online Communcation

Community and Relationships

The readings for this session i did are based on the community and relationships on the internet. I focused more on “The quality of online relationships, “Online personals: An Overview”, “Why youth heart MySpace”, and “Internet Paradox Revisited”.

The typical everyday relationships are supposed to be social associations, connections, or affiliations between two or more people who interact face to face. While an intimate relationship is a “close interpersonal relationship, a relationship in which the participants know or trust one another very well or are confidants of one another, or a relationship in which there is physical or emotional intimacy”. These are my definitions of what relationships should be, so why should social relationship be based on text messaging and electronic mails?

This are far from real they are made up supposedly fairy tales, the way which we want life to be that are basically dangerous. Online communication can be very great for many people. It can provide easy access to friendship and support for the physically less-abled, the elderly, those living in remote locations, and for people who struggle with shyness or low self-esteem. It gives them the opportunity to build confidence and for this same accessibility has created problems.

When you can't see the person you're talking to and they can't see you, you're less likely to feel judged. And they can't see if you look nervous or embarrassed. This means you're both more likely to reveal personal information much earlier than you would in a face-to-face situation.
The downside is that if you can't see someone's face, it's hard to know if they're lying. It's easy to misrepresent yourself online, to kid someone you're something that you're not. And if someone is desperate for love or friendship, they are more likely to fantasize that the person they're talking to is the perfect partner. Although there has been success in online dating and relationships, meeting people online can also be very horrific and heartbreaking.

Identity and Ethinics-"who I wanna be"

Identity and Ethics

The idea of “self” has been a subject that has been widely talked about on the basics of what it is and when it can be used. Different people see themselves in different ways that the society might shun but the cyberspace welcome so they create a world for themselves that is free of biases. The readings for this session we did are based on identity and ethics on the internet. I read on “Gender-Switching in cyberspace”, “How computer change the way we think”, “The discourse of cyberspace as an object of Knowledge”, “Who is in charge of who I am” and “Virtual Rape”.

This different works explained in dept how people interacting with this “fairytale land” that hold no limit on how the identity of self and ethics conforms.
Being in cyberspace allows the user to be anyone they want to be. Basically, the Internet allows you to put on as many fronts whenever you like and for as long as you like. The Internet creates a setting for anonymity to happen and second, there is no accountability through this type of communication, as read from “Gender-Switching in Cyberspace” it states that “the internet offers the opportunity for people to experiment with their identity”. Whereas in our face to face interactions involve us adjusting our personalities to fit in with the given situation, through daily interactions we act in different ways around different people.

We use different fronts when we act like students, friends, siblings, sons, or daughters. So, when communicating on the Internet, our interaction is merely an extension of what we do in our everyday life. And since society has created a situation where anonymity is the norm, anonymous interaction in cyberspace has become a commonplace phenomenon; people can be themselves or create an entirely new persona. The Internet makes anonymity easy so long as there is no physical manipulation involved. It is a way of testing new boundaries, and seeing how far one will go when no one can ever know about it, you can assume roles that perhaps you only imagined. The benefits of social interaction can be achieved, while still maintaining a sense of privacy. This has made the computer to really change they way we think, we have invented a device which actually is controlling our act to work and not work. The use of typewriter as since been phased out, and our thoughts and consciousness is now been ruled by this mere electronic device. It has now become very easy to send mail, messages, and information without anyone knowing who sent it and without having to account for your actions.

The site that talks more on this topic and others is Giordano, G., Stoner, S., Brouer, R., and George, J. (2007). The influences of deception and computer-mediation on dyadic negotiations. Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, 12(2), article 2.
